So having moved back to the chicago area at the beginning of the month I’ve been finally offered a job, it’s an entry level line tech position at a Honda dealer, I was an apprentice mazda tech in Denver. The pay sucks but it seems like the manager has a decent plan-both for me and the shop as a whole- so I’m thinking I’ll take it as it was my first call back and me and my wife are running out of funds fast. However I have another interview scheduled for Monday for a better position at a Kia dealer as an actual tech, and i like Kia more than I like Honda although Honda was still relatively high on my list. What has me worried is that it’s a union dealership which I have no experience with and have only heard bad things about, there were no mechanic unions in Colorado. Should I consider this at all? Or have i heard correctly that unions just take cash out of your pocket and pigeonhole you into a title/wage when maybe you could subjectively argue for more? For some context I wasn’t quite done with my apprenticeship, I’ve done some heavy line but not a lot of diag and while I would be nervous about stepping up to a real tech position the pay for the lube tech position is under 10 bucks an hour for at least 4 months and I was making 14 in denver. Any advice is appreciated as I don’t have any union experience at all.

Never turn down a growth opportunity unless you are confident you are in over your head. Take the tech job and learn your butt off.

Techs are in really high demand right now. No need to take a low paying job. More money in nondealer shops if you don’t mind working on any car
